WHITTIER -- Metallic balloons caught in power lines cut off electricity to 2,012 homes and businesses in Uptown Whittier Thursday night, leaving some Southern California Edison customers without power for almost seven hours, utility officials said.

Metallic balloons -- which are popular in Spring due to Mother's Day and graduations -- were tangled in power lines on Friends Avenue north of Whittier Boulevard at about 5:58 p.m., said Edison spokeswoman Susan Heard.
