More than a half-million chanting, flag-waving demonstrators flooded downtown Los Angeles and poured down Wilshire Boulevard on Monday during two well-organized demonstrations, part of a nationwide work boycott designed to demonstrate the economic clout of illegal immigrants.

Billed as the "Day Without Immigrants," the rallies in Los Angeles drew participants from around Southern California and created widespread closures among restaurants, ethnic markets, farms and other businesses that rely on undocumented workers. Morning rush hour was light, the clusters of day laborers were missing from their usual spots on street corners, and absences in Los Angeles Unified were more than double the usual number.
