Minority Advocates Fear Representation in Statehouse in Jeopardy

Summary


A commission that could significantly change who gets elected to the Legislature is so far severely lacking minority representation, making Asian- American and Latino advocacy groups worry that the number of minority lawmakers could drop.

More than 27,000 Californians are interested in participating in a new 14-member commission to redraw the boundaries of the state's Senate and Assembly districts, but only 11 percent of them are Latino and only 5 percent are Asian American or Pacific Islander.
