PICO RIVERA -- The two dozen lifeguards who monitor the Smith Aquatic Center in Pico Rivera may be young, but they take seriously the responsibilities with which they're entrusted.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, 250 children under the age of five drown nationwide each year, making the tragedies the second-leading cause of accidental deaths in that age group, second only to motor vehicle accidents.
