Smoking Banned in Parks

Summary

ROSEMEAD - Those who are thrilled - or annoyed - by the city's imminent ban on smoking in Rosemead's public parks have the Asian Youth Center in San Gabriel to thank.

The nonprofit group, founded in 1989, provides after-school and summer activities for youths of all ethnicities. It also spearheaded the formation of a coalition that lobbied for the creation of the new law, which takes effect Aug. 11. Violators will be fined $100 for a first offense, $200 for a second offense and $500 for a third and subsequent offenses.
