ROSEMEAD -- A World War II veteran who suffered 86 shrapnel wounds storming the beach in Normandy was finally awarded a slew of medals Friday for his bravery.

Manuel Lopez Sanchez, 84, an Army private from 1942-45, was presented with eight medals by Rep. Hilda Solis, D-El Monte, during a ceremony at the Sanchez home.
